Child IQ and Adult IQ Testing

A hand is reaching up towards a floating incandescent light bulb against a cloudy sky background.

Testing for IQ is something that interests many people. In society, we often hear people talk about an “IQ score” or reference their intelligence on a scale. There are many reasons that someone may want to specifically undergo an IQ test with a professional. Whether it be for school admission paperwork, entrance into an intelligence-based society such as MENSA, or simply out of curiosity about oneself – getting IQ testing done can be quite beneficial.

At Blossoming Minds Psychological Services PC, we are highly trained in IQ testing across multiple IQ measures to provide you with a reliable and clear picture of your cognitive abilities.

It is important to note that IQ-only testing cannot provide diagnostic information. When doing this for high-risk or high-priority reasons (such as getting into a private school or specialized program) it is critical to be knowledgeable of the pros and cons of IQ testing.

IQ testing may be impacted by a variety of factors such as medication timing or type, sleep, fatigue, illness, recent exposure to test materials (also called practice effects), stress, and/or effort. We work with you to reduce the impact of these factors by collaborating with professionals (such as talking to your psychiatrist or prescribing professionals about ways your medication may impact testing), attempting to schedule testing during your ‘peak’ awake window, reducing sensory stimuli in the office, and allowing for breaks as needed during testing. Snacks and hydration are always welcome and encouraged during testing!

Testing for IQ on average can take about 1 to 1.5 hours for adults and 1.5 to 2 hours for children. The process includes standardized administration of an IQ measure that will meet the criteria for the program or school you are applying to and/or provide general information for you personally about your cognitive strengths and needs.

While IQ testing alone cannot provide diagnostic information or detailed information about your functioning, it can give a helpful picture of any obvious strengths or needs. If any remarkable observations arise during IQ testing, you are more than welcome to schedule additional follow-up testing with your assessor (at an extra fee and on a separate testing day).

After all testing is completed, it takes about 1 to 2 business days for your assessor to write a formal summary explaining the findings. This report is then reviewed with you over a 30-minute video call to answer any questions you may have and to provide guidance about next steps. If you need any paperwork completed for your school or program application and/or notarization of the test findings, this is already included in the IQ testing fee.
